Basic Living Room Furnishing & Decor Guide - 9 Steps To Decorate Your Living Room
2021/11/30 17:10:29

A living room is usually the first place we decorate. It is the place where we spend a lot of time with family and it's usually the first room that we show our guests when giving a tour. If you've just moved in with nothing but luggage, chances are you're starting from scratch if you're thinking about decorating your place. Are you looking for a basic living room interior decor guide? At hanseceramictile.com, we bring you the best tips and tricks in furnishing your living room, as well as inspire you to become your own home decorator.

Step 1 - Take Measurements

Sometimes we get a little too excited that we tend to start our decorating process right in the furniture store. Please don't do that! Ever heard of the saying “avoid grocery shopping when you're hungry” Because you tend to make poor choices that are the same thing. Don't go panic buying just because your home is empty. Don’t buy any furniture without taking measurements or even having a layout. Remember the sofa is usually the biggest piece of furniture in the living room, the rest of the room will have to be built around it. If it's too large or small for the space, that's your worst nightmare. Therefore, grab your measuring tape and a notepad and get right into the job.

Step 2 - Create A Floor Plan

Create a floor plan and know your space. If you're starting from scratch, it is still best to consult a professional designer about your floor plans. So you'll be able to understand more about the space you have. But if you're on a budget and there's nothing wrong with doing it the old-fashioned way. Paper, pencil and ruler, and confidence.

Step 3 - Furniture Shopping

Once you are done with measurements and floor plans, now you can go furniture shopping! Always remember you're decorating a living room, not a showroom. Make a checklist of everything you need. You must know the size of the sofa, coffee or center table, side table, accent chair, rug, and all the basic items your living room needs. If you opt for a sectional sofa or a sofa with the chase, choose the right coffee table. To be noted, the shape and size of the table vary depending on the sofa that you have.

Step 4 - Choose Your Color Palette

This next tip is important when buying furniture choose your color palette. One of the easiest way to create a harmonious look at home is to use a monochromatic color scheme. It is based on a single color using various shades and tones to create a sense of variety. Once you have picked the colors from the scheme, your palette is ready. Just because it's monochromatic, doesn't mean you only need one color and one value. Also, there are other color schemes you can use, such as

  • Complementary color scheme: a color scheme with two colors that are opposite each other on the color view
  • Analogous color scheme: a scheme using three colors that are adjacent to each other.
  • Triad color scheme: a scheme with three colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel.
  • Split complementary: a color scheme that uses three colors, one color is chosen first and then the colors on either side of its complementary color are included.
  • Tedratic color scheme: a scheme using two sets of complementary colors

Step 5 - Testing Arrangements

It's time to take the test to arrange the furniture. Start with the bigger pieces first, followed by the smaller ones. Make sure to have your floor plan with you. Make sure the walkway is secured always, expect adjustments and change a plan although you have created a layout that would best fit your space and style. Having it put together right in front of you is the best visual sample you can use. At least you don't have to take so much time moving things around.

Step 6 - Design A Focal Point

Your room's focal point is where your guest's eyes will fall first. When they first walk into your room it could be a huge wall of art placed above the sofa or a decorative mirror a mini gallery wall or a piano or something that would catch the attention of your guests right away.

Step 7 - Adding Decor

Now that you're done with creating a focal point. Time to decorate the room around it for a cohesive feel. Don't forget to pay attention to the vibe your focal point is giving off. Or else, everything will be awkward. To make the room look and feel cozy, add cozy elements like an area rug, throw pillows, and curtains. Remember to stick to your color palette when choosing these elements.

Step 8 - Lighting

Although the room already has good lighting, using a floor lamp or a pendant lamp is a big plus. Lamps can serve as decor, especially during the day when they are not switched on. And if you can't find the best and modern lighting for your living room, buy Hanse's Top-notch lights at an inexpensive price!

Step 9 - Examine By Taking Photos

Take a photo of the room, have it in a landscape shot or wide shot in different angles, and see if there's something that's out of place. If you think there is change it until you get the best formula.
